MT4 vs MT5: Choose the Platform That Fits the Account, Not the Newer Logo
Compare MT4 and MT5 by broker support, symbols, EA compatibility, order workflow, testing needs, rebates and account rules.

Frame the decision correctly
The MT4 vs MT5 decision is not really old platform versus new platform. It is a question of whether the broker account, symbols and tools you will use can work cleanly on that platform.
Many traders treat MT5 as a simple upgrade from MT4 and jump to the conclusion that MT5 must be better. That is too fast. Platform capability is one layer. Broker implementation, symbol specifications, EA compatibility, rebate reporting and account rules are another layer.
CloudSpeed view
CloudSpeed looks at three questions first.
Does the broker account support the platform? Does the strategy depend on EAs, indicators, scripts, testing or a specific order workflow? Can the platform choice affect rebate eligibility, symbol cost or account restrictions?
If those points are not aligned, the platform name alone does not solve the decision.
When MT4 can still make sense
MT4 remains useful because of familiarity, legacy EA infrastructure and the workflow many retail forex traders already use. Indicators, scripts, VPS setups and trading habits are often built around MT4.
If the strategy depends on an MT4 EA that has already been tested, or if the trader only needs the forex and gold symbols available in the broker's MT4 account, MT4 can still be the practical choice. The question is not whether MT4 is newer. The question is whether the real MT4 account is stable, transparent and rebate-eligible.
When MT5 may be the better test
MT5 is generally stronger when the trader needs a more modern platform structure, broader market support, more testing tools or a broker's fuller product range. Official MetaTrader materials highlight MT5 features such as Depth of Market, algorithmic trading and strategy testing, but availability still depends on the broker and symbol.
If the trader needs more advanced testing, multi-symbol observation, broader market tools, or the broker mainly supports important products on MT5, then MT5 deserves a real test.
What actually changes the result
The platform does not create profit by itself. Account conditions behind the platform matter more.
The same broker may offer different symbols, account types, contract specifications, reporting cycles or rebate rules on MT4 and MT5. When a page says “MT5 supported”, the next questions should be: which symbols are available, what is the XAUUSD cost, does rebate depend on account type or platform, and are EAs, scalping or news trading restricted?
How to test before migrating
Do not move an MT4 strategy into MT5 live trading immediately. Start with demo or small-size testing. Check symbol names, contract size, tick value, minimum lot, stop distance, trading hours and commission structure.
Then test the EA or indicator. For automated trading, it is not enough that the tool launches. You need to verify entry, exit, partial close, pending orders, error handling and VPS behavior.
Finally, confirm rebate. A platform change can also change account attribution, reporting fields and symbol eligibility.
Pre-deposit decision check
- Broker support: confirm the actual entity and account support MT4 or MT5.
- Symbol coverage: check whether XAUUSD, EURUSD or your target symbol is available.
- Contract specs: verify tick value, contract size, minimum lot, margin and trading hours.
- EA compatibility: never assume an MT4 EA will run on MT5 unchanged.
- Execution workflow: test pending orders, stop levels, slippage, rejection and partial close.
- Cost structure: compare spread, commission and post-rebate net cost on the same symbol.
- Rebate eligibility: confirm platform, account type, symbol and reporting cycle.
- Withdrawal path: platform quality does not replace clear account funding rules.
What should you remember?
There is no universal MT4 or MT5 winner. MT4 may fit traders with proven legacy tools. MT5 may fit traders who need broader testing and product support.
The real question is not which platform is newer. It is which platform fits your broker account and strategy.
FAQ
Should beginners choose MT4 or MT5?
Start with the platform supported by the broker account, symbol and tools you will actually use. A newer platform is not automatically the better account.
